Kylie Jenner will be celebrating her 18th birthday this Sunday at Beachclub. Since 18 year olds are legally allowed to drink in Quebec, I guess she thought it would be the ideal location. The youngest Jenner’s birthday was on Monday. Since then she has racked up $400,000 in gifts and counting. Among the things she received are: a $11,000-$15,000 Birkin Bag from mom, Kris Jenner, performances from Fetty Wap and Post Malone, and a Ferrari from boyfriend, Tyga. She has also received two birthday cakes, one of which was shaped like her infamous full lips.
You can imagine that anything birthday-related for Jenner is going to have to be big, glamorous, expensive, and memorable. We spoke with Montreal baker Jessika Ménard, the woman responsible for baking the cake for this Sunday’s festivities. Jessika co-owns Le Cozy Cafe and owns Cakes Par Haute Cauture. Here’s what we found out:
How long has the bakery been around for?
Four years in total, but only one and a half years at the current location: 484 Main Road, Hudson.
When was the order for the reality star’s cake placed?
Beachclub called me to place the order about two weeks ago.
Prior to the order, what was your usual clientele?
A lot of weddings, specialized birthday cakes, and just the general public really.
What were your thoughts when you found out you’d be baking Kylie’s cake?
I was overwhelmed at first. I needed to act quick, but I was extremely excited. I love the last-minute crunch. It’s the adrenaline that gets me going and gets me in my zone. Most of the cake will be done on Saturday. It all comes together in the final stretch.
How many people will be working on the cake?
When it comes to my cakes, I work on my own. I don’t care how many orders I have or if I have to be on my feet for 24 hours, I’ll do it. I’m an artists and it’s all about the design.
How did you come up with the design for the cake?
In Quebec, turning 18 is a huge deal, so I wanted to make the cake fitting. It’s going to be glamorous and feminine and appropriate for the occasion.
Are you nervous?
I am just thinking about it as a cake for a client and nothing more. I’ve got to think like that so I don’t get too overwhelmed. I’m confident in the baking, it’s just the little details on the day of that make me nervous. I’m giving it my all and I’ll do my %100 best.
What is the reaction you’re hoping for?
It’s impossible to know what to expect, but I’m there to wow her.
Have you noticed any differences since the order was placed?
Oh yes, there has been a rapid increase in business. The restaurant has been a lot busier. People are coming in asking if I’m there, and even stopping me and asking me about the cake.
Jessika does not have any formal training. Her love of baking and designing cakes developed 4 years ago when she was looking to bake her daughter a birthday cake. It goes to show that hard work really does pay off, and might even lead to a celebrity knocking at your (hypothetical) door.
For Jessika, and for Montreal in general, this birthday bash is a big event. Jessika has an important role in the celebration, and she’s up for the challenge! Thanks to Kylie, we can continue to enjoy both Le Cozy Cafe AND Cakes Par Haute Couture. If you haven’t had the pleasure of eating an exquisite breakfast at Le Cozy Cafe, you must give it a try!
