Are you feeling like you’re going to the same places every weekend, and that it’s time to try something new? When it comes to nightlife in Montreal it’s pretty easy to stay within your comfort zone, and a night out in the Old Port can seem pretty limited to wining and dining. We can now thank our lucky stars because an ambitious group of three noticed the gap in the Old Port’s market, namely bars that are accessible to everyone, chill, and affordable. Thus, the emergence of your new favourite bar: Pub BreWskey.
Owned by Derrick Robertson, Karine Amyotte, and Guillaume Couraud, this bar is different from anything you’ve experienced in Montreal. Since opening on May 24th of this year, the team at Pub BreWskey has done their best to ensure you’ll have a new experience every time you step through the door. They always have 12 beers on tap, on a constant rotation. Sometimes on a Saturday they can rotate up to five times throughout the day. If you’re not sure what kind of beer to order, grab a flight and sample a few, and if all else fails ask one of the staff members, their beer knowledge might just blow you away.
Now let’s talk food. Chef Denis Guiol handpicks a new special every day to keep things interesting. Nothing in their kitchen is frozen, everything is as fresh as can be, and you can find alcohol in almost every dish they serve (beer battered onion rings for example). I would describe the food as rustic chic, with the comfort food items done up to a new level. The presentation is outstanding, the flavours and precision are what you would find in fine dining. Simply put, it’s refined pub food. The kitchen also stays open until 2:00am, which is ideal if you want to swing by for a drink and a bite to eat after a shift at a restaurant or a night out with friends. Also, they just launched their brunch menu last weekend, so on Sundays from 12:00pm-4:00pm, you know what to do!
In terms of whiskey, their selection is beyond impressive. If you want to sip, mix, or shoot your whiskey, they’ve got something for you, and they really know what their talking about! Derrick describes himself as the “beer guy”and his partner Guillaume as the “whiskey guy.”Guillaume, developed a strong passion for different whiskeys while living in Scotland. He can answer any whiskey-related question you may come up with. Derrick, the “beer guy”, began on a small scale with home brewing and moved on to become a mechanical engineer building microbreweries.
As for specials, they host happy hours from 4:00pm-7:00pm on weeknights, BBQ Sundays in the summer, cheap nachos and wings on hockey nights, and they hold scotch tastings in house for a very reasonable price. You will fall in love with the atmosphere at Pub BreWskey immediately. It is comfortable, well played out, small but not too small, and tucked away on St. Paul.
I could talk for hours about this pub, it’s something new without being a trendy new supper club that you need guest list to attend. As of December they will be creating their own microbrews! This place is for everyone, whether you’re in a suit or sweat pants you can get comfortable and have a bite to eat and something great to drink. I’ll leave it at this: Reasonably priced, good beer, amazing staff, and a killer atmosphere. What are you waiting for?
