I might be one of the biggest sushi lovers out there. It's pretty rare that I'm not craving sushi. I'm not talking about a once-in-a-blue-moon craving, here - sometimes I wake up craving sushi. Lucky for me (and sushi lovers alike), sushi has blown up in Canada over the last few years. You can find a choice spot in almost any neighbourhood in Montreal (and many other metropolitan areas).
So, as any sushi lover would, I immediately set out to find my go-to sushi sport when I moved to the Plateau in Montreal. There is no shortage of great sushi in my area, but I found one that stood out:
When I first tried Sushi Momo, I fell in love. It has an adorable charm, a friendly staff and absolutely delicious sushi. You can imagine my surprise when I heard that they were about to make a bold change: Sushi Momo was going vegan. Just recently, my favorite sushi place switched over to an entirely vegan menu. I wondered, why would they do such a thing? Despite being skeptical, I decided to go and check it out. After going back for seconds, I can now say with certainty that it was a great call!
Sushi Momo is totally killing the vegan sushi game. But you're probably wondering: what is vegan sushi? In the absence of fish, a staple ingredient in our favorite Japanese dish, you can expect a variety of alternative ingredients. Some of the unique and unexpected treats include: pickled radish, pickled eggplant, Portobello mushrooms, pickled bamboo shoots, Japanese mustard leaves, Japanese gourd, green apple, zucchini, jackfruit and more.
If you have a chance to pay them a visit, try to the jackfruit. This fruit is native to parts of South and Southeast Asia, and it is often used as a meat substitute in vegetarian cooking. At Sushi Momo, if you order this option, you will forget that you're eating vegan sushi altogether! Their sushi also contains a variety of different sauces, which is rare for sushi rolls. Their sauces range from sweet to spicy and they are beyond delectable.
If you're looking to grab some takeout or just want a great little sushi place to add to your repertoire, Momo is your spot! But take heed: this well-kept secret has been spilled. Lately, they are packed (especially on weekends)! Call in advance to make a reservation and get ready for a truly unique sushi experience.
